Title
Characteristics
of
Effective
and
Ineffective
Mentors
as
Identified
by
Student
Registered
Nurse
Anesthetists
Author
Lauren Daigle; Tatiana Grant
Abstract
Nurse
anesthesia
students
must
spend
a
considerable
amount
of
time
with
Certified
Registered
Nurse
Anesthetists
(CRNAs)
in
order
to
develop
into a
competent
practitioner
.
Nurse
anesthetists
routinely
build
knowledge
from
textbooks
, but the
mastery
of the
practice
can
only
develop
through
mentorship
. In
anesthesia
,
mentors
are
always
a
valuable
resource
,
without
effective
mentoring
techniques
the
learning
experience
for the
SRNA
may
be
affected
. A
descriptive
study
was
conducted
using
a
quantitative
design
. A
survey
technique
was
used
to
gain
an
understanding
of
mentoring
characteristics
. These
surveys
were
adapted
from
Katz’s
1984
study
,
one
closed
ended
question
and
two
open-ended
questions
were
added
. A
six-point
Likert
Scale
was
used
.
Responses
to the
46
closed
ended
study
items
and
two
open-ended
questions
were
analyzed
.
Scaling
cues
ranged
from
“not
descriptive”
to
“extremely
descriptive”
“not
applicable”
was also
included
.
During
the
analysis
of the
responses
from
each
survey
,
some
common
themes
surfaced
.
Majority
of the
responses
that
described
an
ineffective
mentor
included
“rarely
descriptive
or
“not
descriptive.”
As for the
characteristics
of
effective
mentors
, the
majority
of the
answer
selections
were
“frequently
descriptive”
or
“extremely
descriptive.”
The
two
characteristics
that
received
the
highest
ratings
included
actively
teaches
with
76.9%
of
students
stating
that
it
was
“extremely
descriptive”
of their
most
effective
mentor
and,
communication
skills
with
65.3%
of
students
saying
it
was
“rarely
descriptive”
of their
most
ineffective
mentor
. The
only
characteristic
that
received
the
highest
rating
in the
category
of
“not
descriptive”
was
empathy/respect
,
46.1%
(12
students)
.
It
is
evident
that the
characteristics
actively
teaches
and
communication
skills
are
perceived
as
important
by
students
.
It
should be
noted
that in the
open-ended
questions
seven
people
all
added
that
patience
is
also
descriptive
of an
effective
mentor
.
While
another
four
students
stated
that
impatience
is
a
characteristic
of an
ineffective
mentor
,
indicating
that
patience
is
perceived
as
important
among
the
group
.
